Cinema Coterie

At High Flyers: Academy of Humanities, we’ve made it a cause to identify and address questions that existence on this planet poses. We do this in many ways and Cinema Coterie is one of such ways.

Cinema Coterie, a venture of the alumni of The Department of English & CLS, Saurastra University Rajkot, proposes to establish a platform of a like-minded fraternity who would enjoy posing questions about life as they actively participate in analyzing art.

It would carry forward the initial belief that Cinema is a powerful medium to sensitize people about issues contemporary and universal; issues to which, even if a solution is not found, should not be taken to render humans helpless.

But Cinema Coterie certainly doesn’t subscribe to the mindless collage of audio-visual vestiges that generally go in the name of Cinema. So, it invites only a serious, open-minded & tolerant group to be part of it to view and review some of the classics that have been successful in transcending time and space.

Dental Health Tips:
.
Oral Cavity is a gate way of human body. Our teeth are the guards of our body. So our guards must be strong & healthy to protect our body from surrounding enemy germs. If our teeth remain strong & healthy, our body also remains strong and healthy. So keep your teeth healthy through out your life as Prevention is better than cure.
To keep healthy and sound teeth, there are some golden tips which are as below:
* Do not eat sweets in-between meals.
* Eat nutritious diets. i.e; Protein, Vitamins, minerals & more.
.
.
* Eat fibrous foods after meals to clean your teeth naturally.
* Brush your teeth two times a day that are in the morning and evening.
.
.
* Toothpaste or toothpowder acts only as a lubricant during brushing. You have to clean your teeth mechanically.
* Chew your food on both sides every time so that each segment becomes strong and healthy.
* Prevent children from having bad habits like thumb sucking, lollypop chewing, tongue thrusting, bobby pin opening, nail biting, and oral breathing.
.
.
* Brush your teeth correctly with scientific method.
* Brush front side of upper teeth with upside downwards and lower teeth with downside upwards.

.
* Chewing surface cleanses by forward and backward movement of brush. The important thing to remember is that an effective brushing cleans every exposed tooth surface in a gentle, massaging motion.
* Do not brush with a very hard brush and more pressure for a long time.
* Visit your Dentist once every six months.

ARCHITECTURE IN FOCUS….!!!!!!

HIIIII…… I AM AASHKA BADRAKIA AND STUDENT OF ARCHITECTURE, COMPLETED 2ND YEAR, FROM IPSA ( INDUBHAI PAREKH SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE), RAJKOT, GUJARAT, INDIA.
.......
.
.
WHY I CHOSE TO BE IN ARCHITECTURE???
.
I AM BASICALLY OF A CREATIVE NATURE. I LIKED MY CREATIONS. TO GET ADMISSION IN ENGINEERING I NEEDED TO PASS HSC [HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL CERTIFICATE] IN SCIENCE STREAM. AFTER PASSING HSC I LOOKED FOR THE OPTIONS FOR PROFESSIONS IN WHICH I WOULD HAVE DIGNITY IN SOCIETY AS WELL AS WORK SATISFACTION WITH MY CREATIONS. SO OUT OF TWO OPTIONS – INTERIOR DESIGNING AND ARCHITECTURE – I HAVE CHOSE ARCHITECTURE TO BE MY DREAM CAREER. FROM THEN ON I STARTED DREAMING HOW WOULD I FEEL WHEN MY DESIGNS WOULD BECOME HUGE PARTS OF DAILY LIVES OF PEOPLE… I AM VERY HAPPY WITH MY CHOICE. WHY? I’LL EXPLAIN FURTHER.
.
.
HOW DID I GET INTO ARCHITECTURE???
.
AS MOST OTHER COURSES EVEN B.ARCH REQUIRED AN ENTRANCE EXAM TO BE CLEARED WHICH IS AN APTITUDE TEST. IT TESTS YOUR LIKING, LOGIC AND KNOWLEDGE IN THIS FIELD. IT CONSISTS OF DRAWINGS AND ALSO AN ONLINE EXAM WHERE YOU HAVE TO ANSWER SOME ARCHITECTURE RELATED QUESTIONS. I HAD A FAIRLY GOOD HAND IN DRAWING AND A GOOD LOGIC TO CLEAR THE INTERNET TEST SO I JUST WENT FOR SKETCHING CLASSES TO PRACTICE IT IN A BETTER MANNER AND ALSO WENT TO A PROFESSOR IN MY COLLEGE WHO HELPED ME OUT WITH FURTHER DETAILED AND FOCUSED PREPARATION. WITH ALL THIS I FINALLY CLIMBED THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS MY CAREER. THE MERITS WERE OUT AND I CLEARED WITH A REAL GOOD SCORE WITH WHICH I WAS ABLE TO GET THE ADMISSION EASILY. THERE ARE BOOKS AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET FOR PREPARATION BUT FOR AN ASPIRING ARCHITECT I SUGGEST THAT GOOD DRAWING AND SKETCHING CLASSES, SHARPENING UP OF 3D IMAGINATIONS AND KNOWLEDGE OF SOME TYPES OF COLOURING EXPLORATIONS CAN HELP YOU IN A VERY GOOD MANNER IN THE TESTS AND ALSO FURTHER IN THE COURSE
.
.
.
WHAT DID I STUDY TILL NOW???
..
THE BIG DAY WAS HERE… THE FIRST DAY OF MY FIRST YEAR OF MY COLLEGE!! (IT CAN REALLY BE SCARY) BUT TO MY SURPRISE IT ALL WENT BEAUTIFULLY WITH INTRODUCTIONS WITH MY CLASSMATES, PROFESSORS AND SENIORS…. MY FIRST YEAR COMPLETELY COMPRISED OF OPENING UP OF MINDS TO NEW IDEAS BY LEAVING BEHIND ALL THE PRE-NOTIONS PREVAILING IN MINDS BY THE HELP OF ENJOYABLE EXERCISES. IT WAS TOUGH DURING THE EARLY SEMESTER AS I REALIZED WE REALLY ASSUMED MANY THINGS IN LIFE WHICH COULD AFFECT OUR CREATIONS IN SO MANY ASPECTS. DOING ALL THIS MY FIRST YEAR FLEW BY SO FAST MAKING ME ALTOGETHER A DIFFERENT PERSON.WELL…ONLY CREATIVE MINDS ARE NOT ENOUGH TO BE AN ARCHITECT AND HENCE TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE IS REALLY ESSENTIAL.
.
SECOND YEAR FOCUSED ON SHARPENING THE TOOLS OF DRAWINGS, LEARNING BASICS OF CONSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES ALONG WITH APPLYING CREATIVE IDEAS IN PROJECTS LIKE SCHOOL DESIGN AND HOUSING. THAT WAS REAL FUN AS IT GAVE ME A CHANCE TO PRODUCE SOMETHING OF MY OWN FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IN MY LIFE… IT WAS A REAL THRILLING EXPERIENCE…
.
...
OUR STUDIES WERE FULLY SUPPORTED BY WORKSHOPS, SITE VISITS AND RSPs (RELATED STUDY PROGRAM) WHERE A PART OF HOUSING WAS SELECTED AND BY LIVING THERE A FULL DETAILED STUDY WAS DONE TO UNDERSTAND ITS MAKING. WE VISITED “KIDI” (A VILLAGE NEAR MORBI) TO STUDY ITS TYPICAL HOUSE FORMS KNOWN AS “BHUNGAS” AND WE ALSO WENT TO JUNAGADH TO STUDY THE TYPICAL HOUSES OF A COMMUNITY CALLED “NAGARS” LIVING IN “NAGARWAD”. HERE WE LEARNT HUMAN NATURE AND HIS REQUIREMENTS IN HIS LIVING STYLE ACCORDING TO HIS NATURE. THOSE RSPs MADE ME REALIZE HOW IMPORTANT IT WAS TO UNDERSTAND A PERSON TO CONSTRUCT FOR HIM SOMETHING THAT WOULD BECOME CLOSE TO HIS HEART. FROM THESE DAYS ON I GOT REALLY CLOSE TO MY STUDYING AS CAME TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF ARCHITECTS IN MAKING OF TODAYS WORLD....

....
OUR WORKING STYLE???
....
A BALANCE OF INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP WORKS WERE GIVEN TO US SO AS TO HELP US GET ACCUSTOMED TO BOTH KINDS OF WORK HAPPENING IN THE PROFESSION IN FUTURE. THAT WOULD BE REALLY HELPFUL TO US.INDIVIDUAL WORK CONSISTED OF SUBMISSIONS AT SHORT INTERVALS RELATING TO THE TOPICS BEING TAUGHT. THESE SUBMISSIONS ARE IN THE FORM OF TECHNICAL DRAWINGS, CREATIVE DRAWINGS AND ALSO MODELS SUPPORTING THESE DRAWINGS WHICH ALL COLLECTIVELY FORM THE BASIS OF INTERNAL GRADING AT THE END OF EVERY TERM. AND LET ME TELL YOU THESE ARE REALLY NOT EASY TO ACCOMPLISH AND WHEN YOU MANAGE TO COMPLETE THEM IN THE BEST POSSIBLE MANNER YOU REALLY FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE WON A WAR… BUT WHEN YOU SEE YOUR GRADES YOU FEEL ITS REALLY WORTH ALL THE PAIN….
....

....
ALONG WITH THIS WHEN LARGE TOPICS HAD TO BE RESEARCHED STUDENTS WERE DIVIDED INTO GROUPS AND DETAILED STUDIES WERE DONE WHICH ALSO FORMED AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE COURSE. AND THESE WERE THE TIMES WE HAD LOADS OF FUN SHARING IDEAS.
....
AT THE END OF EVERY TERM AN EXTERNAL EXAMINATION WAS CONDUCTED WHICH HELD EQUAL IMPORTANCE TO INTERNAL MARKING.
....
FESTIVALS….!!!!
...
YOU MUST BE THINKING WHERE’S THE REAL FUN??????? YEARLY WE HAD TWO MAJOR FUNCTIONS WHERE THE STUDENTS OF ALL YEARS CAME TOGETHER TO SHARE THEIR IDEAS AND ALSO GET FRESH FROM ALL THE HARD WORK HAPPENING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. ONE OF THEM WAS THE “FOUNDATION DAY” WHICH WAS THE FOUNDING DAY OF OUR COLLEGE IN WHICH WE HAD AN EVENING DEDICATED TO OUR COLLEGE, AND OTHER WAS THE FESTIVAL WHICH WAS USUALLY AT THE END OF THE YEAR AND LASTS FOR AROUND A WEEK. HERE WE CONDUCTED EXHIBITIONS OF THE WORKS OF STUDENTS, HAD SMALL FUN-FILLED COMPETITIONS, DID A GOOD AMOUNT OF CAMPUS DECORATIONS AND ALSO INVITED ARCHITECTS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY TO SHARE THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE WITH US…
....
WE HAD CULTURAL EVENINGS WHERE WE PARTICIPATED WITH ALL ENTHUSIASM AND WAS A REAL ATTRACTION OF THE FESTIVAL AS THE TALENTS OTHER THAN CREATIVITY COULD COME OUT ONLY ON THIS DAY.
...
THIS JOURNEY OF BRINGING THE FESTIVAL OUT IN THE BEST POSSIBLE MANNER HAD ITS BEST PART IN THE TRAVELLING TOWARDS IT – THAT IS THE ALL THE PREPARATIONS BEING DONE. WE HAD JOLLY GOOD TIMES STAYING AT COLLEGE TILL LATE NIGHTS DECORATING IT, PRACTICING DANCING, SINGING, AND DRAMAS, SOME ONE PLAYING SOME INSTRUMENTS HERE AND THERE ALL THE TIME AND A BIG LIVELY COMMUNITY WORKING TOGETHER TO REACH TO THE DESTINY.
....
COMPETITIONS!!!!
.....
NASA!!! A SPECIAL COMPETITION HELD FOR ONLY ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS OF INDIA IS HELD EVERY YEAR AT DIFFERENT PLACES IN INDIA TWICE A YEAR ONE OF WHICH IS A ZONAL NASA AND THE OTHER BEING THE ANNUAL NASA. THIS IS A BIG SHOW BUSINESS WHERE IN WE HAD TO SHOW THE BEST WORKS OF OUR STUDENTS AND THE BEST TALENTS IN OUR COLLEGE IN ON THE SPOT COMPETITIONS AND ALSO PRE GIVEN TASKS AND THE BEST ONES WOULD WIN. THIS WAS A BIG TIME ATTRACTION FOR THE STUDENTS AS THIS BROUGHT IN A CHANCE FOR A LOT OF EXPERIENCE AND ALSO HUGE AMOUNTS OF EXPLORATIONS, AND ALSO CHANCES TO HAVE FUN IN DIFFERENT PLACES…..
......
THIS HAS BEEN MY EXPERIENCE IN ARCHITECTURE TILL NOW AND TODAY I FEEL REALLY HAPPY TO BE A PART OF A COURSE WHICH IN FUTURE IS GOING TO BRING REALITY TO MY DREAMS AND ALSO GIVE ME A CHANCE TO BECOME A PART OF THE WORLD CLOSELY IN MY OWN SMALL WAY.
....
YET I HAVE NOT DECIDED WHETHER TO GO FOR THE MASTERS OF STRAIGHT AWAY START MY CAREER BUT IM DEFINITELY LOOKING FORWARD TO MY COMING YEARS OF STUDIES AND TO KNOW WHAT THEY HAVE IN STORE FOR ME….
......
WELL ARCHITECTURE IS REALLY FUN FOR THOSE SEEKING A CREATIVE WORLD BUT AS YOU ALL KNOW IT IS VERY RIGHTLY SAID NO GAINS WITHOUT PAINS…
.......

STUDENT OF B.ARCH

The Seven Intelligences: How to identify your child’s Strengths.

The Seven Intelligences: How to identify your child’s Strengths.

Some times you are confused by your child’s behavior. You don’t understand that why your child doesn’t improve in some of the areas in studies although his/her teacher and you are working hard on his/her. We always listen to parents talking “My son is good in projects but isn’t able to do well in writing tests or my daughter takes less interest in playing outdoor games” or “His/her teacher complains about his/her weaknesses but isn’t able to find the right solution”.

We always have some dream about our child’s career. We put our efforts to fulfill our dream through our child and scripting his/her mind without knowing his/her abilities. When you find from school that your child is weak in a particular area and after a lot effort from your teacher and you he/she doesn’t improve than don’t be frustrated. There are ways to improve and put them on the right track.

I will tell you about my experience with my daughter’s career. At early time I realized that scripting a child’s brain with a particular career is not a right thing and one should wait till the right time. Till her 10th Std. [SSC] she was a good student. But in the 12th Std. [HSC] she came out as an average student. Now the mind jogging started to choose the right stream of her capacity and choice. My wife is a teacher since last 22 yrs. She took her Multiple Intelligence Test and as result we found that she scored high in Visual – Spatial or Space, Logical-Mathematical and people intelligence. So she finally took admission in Architecture [B.Arch] and she since last two years is doing remarkably well.

By developing Multiple Intelligence in early age helps a lot to a child in understanding all areas and will make him/her take part willingly in his/her weaker areas. Children learn in a variety of ways. This is why the traditional method of education, where a teacher lectures children as they sit facing her in rows, is often woefully inadequate. Once we discover the specific intellectual strengths our children have, we can help provide them with new, stimulating experiences that will inspire them to learn in their own ways.

The Seven Intelligences:

There are seven different types of intelligence, as described by Harvard psychologist Mr. Howard Gardner. According to Gardner, we know that every child has a bit of each in different proportions. As I describe them, see if you visualize your own child in any of the categories. However, don't jump to immediate conclusions. It's likely that your son or daughter is a mixture of several learning styles, since all children are unique, complex individuals.
*[Test to identify your child’s Strengths table is at the end of article]

Simple Explanation of The Model of Multiple Intelligence:

Word or Linguistic Intelligence:
Children with strengths in this category tend to enjoy reading and writing. They like to read books for enjoyment, and also find word play fun. They enjoy crosswords, tongue twisters, jokes, and rhyme. They are typically good spellers, but even if they have difficulty with the mechanics of language they love hearing and telling stories.

Logical and Mathematical Intelligence:
These children display a lot of curiosity about things in their environment and how they work. They might wonder why a clock ticks or how a toy works, and take it apart to discover its mechanics. They like computers, chemistry sets, patterns, puzzles, and brain-teasers. They think conceptually. You might see them playing chess or strategy games. Math problems come more easily for them than other children. They have questions about life, the universe, time, and physics.

Visual and Space Intelligence:
These kids think in images. They tend to be daydreamers. They often know exactly where everything is placed in their bedroom, even if it's a mess. They also might be able to find the missing keys or shoes by simply picturing where they last saw them. They are highly sensitive to the placement of objects, and if you were to redecorate a room, they would either be extremely pleased or very irritated. They like jigsaw puzzles, art, and drawing. They're good with maps, diagrams, and enjoy videos.

Bodily or Kinesthetic Intelligence:
Children who lean toward this kind of intelligence are sometimes considered hyperactive, if they aren't given things to do. They crave movement and motion. They love to be outdoors on the playground. They process knowledge through bodily sensations.

Musical Intelligence:
Children with musical intelligence might sing to themselves, hum, whistle, and tap. They aren't just interested in music but have an ability to also understand it. They are rhythmic, and very good with an instrument. They might be able to easily pick out harmonies and "parts" in a song, which makes them excellent members of a choir. They may talk about playing in a band or orchestra someday. They like dancing and have particular opinions about the music they hear. They have an ear for music and can tell you when you're off pitch.

People or Interpersonal Intelligence:
These kids are people-oriented. They are social and enjoy being around others. They usually have friends and an uncanny ability to understand how other people are feeling. They are good at conflict resolution, and can be peacemakers. They always seem to know who's mad at who, who's going where, and all the latest gossip. They like to be involved in extra curricular activities.

Self or Intrapersonal Intelligence:
Despite having a strong personality, these children tend to choose solitary activities. They shy away from crowds and participate in solo hobbies and personal activities they find stimulating. They might keep a diary, write, or absorb themselves in certain artistic talents. They have a very strong sense of who they are and what they'd like to do with their lives. They are acutely aware of their own dreams, perceptions, and ideas, sometimes even leaning toward the psychic. They follow their own beat, so to speak, and aren't crowd-pleasers. They don't follow trends, but have their own unique style. They are good at motivating themselves to complete projects that interest them.

So, Do you recognize your child in any of the categories? The more you understand your child's particular way of learning, what motivates his/her, and how he/she thinks, the more you'll be able to reach his/her on his/her terms and inspire him/her to be his/her greatest self.

I have found in a book named “Seven ways at once” that you can identify your child’s strong and weak areas by a simple test on your observation to your child. But I suggest that what ever be the outcome of the test, consult Experts before you act. Some schools are also working on MI model and their teachers can help you.

Most important: forcing your child to attend classes or doing particular activity to improve weak intelligence will not help. There are strategic activities available by which a child himself improves and starts taking interest. Experts can help and Guide you.
